If you want to make your personal challenge a big, blogging-wide challenge, I can help you do that! I haven't hosted any challenges myself (I have two planned, but I'm waiting for a good time, lol), but I've participated in lots and helped make buttons for a couple. :)

This sounds like a good challenge. I just graduated from college, and I already feel like I miss some of the guidance and discussion about reading that you get there. So, sign me up for the give away and the challenge!

@Ellen/Mom:

Did you see my review of The Book Thief? Haven't heard of "Al Capone" but I did read Rachel and Leah years ago and was entertained. Have you thought of using graphic novels with your students? I think Persepolis 1, which is a memoir about a 11-year-old girl in Iran 1979, would be interesting for your class, but I'm not sure you could bring in so much politics. I think the combined illustration/story would help them learn the words...but maybe not.

As for award-winners, I don't finish a book if I dislike it in the first 50-100 pages. I figure there are too many out there! But I'm going to try to read 5-10 Pulitzers and 5 Nobels this year; we'll see about next year! There are so many books and so little time.

I'll read your dissertation, even if it doesn't make it on any award-winning lists...

Now that I'm "done" with my dissertation, I have been diving into some of the books I've neglected. This week I read "The Book Thief," an absolute must; Al Capone Does My Shirts," which I will recommend to my middle school students; and "Rachel and Leah," which I found relatively unsatisfactory.
       I did decide to read all the Pulitizer prize winners in fiction one year, and decided there were a couple that were not worth reading--I remember "The Executioners Song" was one I refused to finish. It really should not even have been considered in the category it won anyway.
       Anyway, I'll enjoy your list--both for me and for my students-- as I get back into the world of 2008 and out of the fourteenth century--although there are people telling me to turn my dissertation into a book--trust me, it won't be on this list! Your mom
