Short Story Authors to Read

The Quest to Find Perfect Short Stories

I’ve decided to find the perfect short story and/or authors of short stories. I found a few lists of “best short story writers” and I’ve combined them below. I realize that many of these authors have also written novels. I’m going to keep any links on this page related to short stories or novellas. This list includes both “to be read” and my “recently read,” with links to any reviews on Rebecca Reads. If the author is the link, that means I read a representation of their stories. If I read just one collection of stories, I link to that.

Note that I tend to avoid modern writers, and there are a lot on the list. I’ll try some and see how it goes.

Have I missed your favorite short story author? Please tell me, and I’ll add him or her to the list.

This is a great list. I am trying to find a list where two or three stories can easily be compared for similar themes, plots, characters, irony, etc.
