Antarctica: A Continent of Wonder by Mario Cuesta Hernando and Raquel Martin (Prestel Publishing, English 2021; originally published in Spanish, 2020 Mosquito Books) is a gorgeous large format upper elementary nonfiction picture book about the frozen continent and the animals to be found there. With a first person narration about a trip to the continent, the large two-page spreads give the reader maps, details on how one can reach Antarctica, and specifics about the chilly underwater world, as well as the ice-covered land.
One section of the book details facts about various animals in Antarctica, including whales, penguins, and seals. Another section details the types of things scientists study while visiting the continent and what living in the Antarctica environment is like. Further sections touch on the history of Antarctic exploration and the current threats to the unique continent.
The extra-large size of these pages give a nice context to the vastness of the icy continent and the challenges of getting there, living there, and working there. The serious watercolor illustrations likewise contribute to the immersive feel as one reads this book. A one page glossary explains key terms and content found in the book. All in all, a nice book for researching Antarctica or simply reading for the pure enjoyment of learning about an awe-inspiring location.
