With a story-frame of the spawning of newborn coral reef, Kate Messner’s The Brilliant Deep: Rebuilding the Coral Reef (illustrated by Matthew Forsythe; Chronicle, 2018) gives a biography of Ken Nedimyer, who began the Coral Restoration Foundation. He grew up with a deep interest in coral reefs and the picture book begins when he is a child and follows his life journey working with coral reef habitats.

As Ken got older, when he noticed the modern issue of dying corals due to rising ocean temperatures. He created a way that humans can help create new coral reefs beginning with artificial reefs. The process is that people grows coral in a protected location and then bring it to a struggling reef to help revive the reef.

The book has great read-aloud potential and it highlights an initiative that children and families can help with.
