Living Things and Nonliving Things: A Compare and Contrast Book by Kevin Kurtz (Arbordale Publishing, 2017) is an early nonfiction picture book for the youngest readers. It features real photographs and minimal text with lots of nonfiction facts about what makes living things different from nonliving things. Lots of white space and bright, up-to-date illustrations make this a refreshing picture book that kids that will help teach the basic concept of life on earth versus nonliving things.

Kurtz’s book is an ideal example of what makes engaging and relevant nonfiction for very young children. End pages do provide more vocabulary, teaching ideas, and idea charts for determining living or nonliving for additional items children encounter every day.
