Meerkat Moves Out of the Desert by Nikki Potts, illustrated by Maarten Lenoir (Picture Window Books, 2020), gives a specific animal a dilemma: she’s tired of her habitat and would like to try something new. With a cartoon meerkat layered on top of photographic textures and scenes, this book provides an interesting contrast between Meerkat’s home in the desert and the scenes she visits: snowy mountains, a cave in the taiga, a child’s playground, and a backyard garden. End matter pages give trivia and facts about meerkats.

Similar books in the series share stories of other animals leaving their habitats.

Using these in tandem would nicely tie into lessons learning about specific habitats and how animals have specifically adapted to live in their environments.
