In a fantastic dream, a young boy travels to the moon in a plane in the picture book Moon Plane by Peter McCarty (Henry Holt, 2006). Once there, he walks and jumps on the moon, which feels like flying. There is little science in this book, since of course airplanes don’t fly out of the solar system, but I loved the soft illustrations and dream of a child.

There are few words on each page, so this was a welcome break from some of the other more word-intense moon books. My son wanted to learn about the moon but sometimes fiction is very needed, especially when you’re three years old. It was fun to find a fictional picture book that tied in so well with the nonfiction books we read about the moon.
