Follow the Moon Home: A Tale of One Idea, Twenty Kids, and a Hundred Sea Turtles by Phillippe Cousteau and Deborah Hopkinson (illustrated by Meilo So; Chronicle, 2016). Watercolor illustrations and friendly text with unique typography share the story of a child new to the area that spearheads a class project. The project, “Lights Out for Loggerheads,” hopes to make a difference in their community for the hatching sea turtles. The first person narration makes this book a delight to read aloud and the colorful illustrations are pleasant to look at.
Although the story sounds like a true one, I cannot find any indication that it is built on a true classroom project. It nonetheless provides a clear environmental message and includes end matter that may encourage students to try their own environmental projects in their area.
