Fungus is Among Us! by Joy Keller (Innovation Press, 2019) has a fictional and rhyming story-line that follows a girl walking in a forest and through her home. Throughout her walk, she learns about all the fungus that is in her life. This includes mushrooms, moss, mold on old food and on shower walls (ewwww). But this also includes mention of edible mushrooms and yeast in bread.

To emphasize the living aspect of fungi (or maybe just to be fun), the pictures show cartoon-y eyes on the fungal items. This cartoony look also makes it all the more fun to read through. The author touches on the good sides of fungi and explains non-fiction facts in sidebars throughout. With all the educational aspects of the book, it works well as an informative book for anyone learning about living things, specifically fungi of course. It’s a great introduction to mycology in general.
