Courage Like Kate: The True Story of a Girl Lighthouse Keeper by Anna Crowley Redding (illustrated by Emily Sutton; Random House 2022) is based on the true story of Kate Moore, the first official female lighthouse keeper. In order to help her father, young Kate takes care of the lighthouse for him. Illustrations are created with watercolor, ink, pencil, and pastels, and this variety of mediums provides child-friendly illustrations. The story and pictures show the dangers and difficulties accompanying her task, with the treachery of the 30-foot bridge across the roiling water and a devastating glance at a circular stairwell she must climb.

Courage Like Kate gives a young read inspiration to do hard things. It also nicely fits into a discussion of lighthouses and their purpose.
